Most of our customers specify their pendants with diffusers. We stongly recommend them for situations in which your pendant will be high enough to show the light bulb from beneath: for example, a pendant that will be hung over a dining table.
A diffuser is a translucent acrylic disk that has been custom configured to fit your pendant. It is recessed into the bottom so it is not seen from the side, but is seen from directly below the fixture in order to shield the bulb from view. There is a gap of about 1/2 inch all the way around the diffuser to allow for proper ventilation.
Certain models of our pendants cannot be fitted for diffusers due to their shape, size or other technical constraints. If a diffuser is not shown as an option, it is not available on that model.
Our acrylic diffusers can be removed for easy cleaning. They are attached to the bottom of the shade with one or two caps, which can be removed very easily without the need for tools or other hardware, making the diffuser a breeze to clean anytime.
Our lighting fixtures only take diffusers at the bottom of the shade, where they shield the light bulb from view from below. All fixture shades have open tops to allow for plenty of uplight and air circulation.
When we construct the shade for your lighting fixture, we use a special washer-fit ring so that the diffuser can be attached. This means that we cannot retro-fit a diffuser on a pendant; if you would like a diffuser, you must specify it when you order the fixture.
The diffuser will not affect the overall light emittance from the light. It will, however, cause the light to be softened when viewing from below.
